[Per l’taliano vedi sotto] 22 September is Car Free Day, the final day in the annual European Mobility Week. Whether or not you’re going car free, as drivers you share the roads with an increasing number of European School parents on foot or bike. Why are they car free? And, drivers: what do they think about you?

Balint – English language section

We walk because it’s a great choice for the environment and it’s probably the fastest way up the hill. We’ve been walking since my youngest child was four years old – it’s only a 10 minute walk, so it’s easily manageable for nursery school kids. To be honest, it doesn’t feel that safe because there are parts of Via Montello with no sidewalk and we have to share the road with drivers. Some school parents drive safely; some others… well, I’m not sure they have the experience of being walkers and understand what it means to share space with pedestrians, and I’m guessing they don’t know how it feels to have cars zooming by very close to you as you’re walking with your children.

Denis – French language section

We got the electric bike because I think that driving is stressful, and only means contributing pointlessly to the morning traffic. I’d walk with the kids if it wasn’t so far, but we come about 2.5km on the bike, all uphill. I think some drivers are very careful, and others are not – it’s really variable. We have two cars, but this year we had to decide whether to replace the second one or not. We asked the kids if they would prefer coming by bike or car, and they said by bike. So we bought electric bikes, and now we’re getting rid of our second car for good.

Ivana – Italian language section

We drive part way from Masnago and then walk up the rest of the way from Via Marzorati. I was really surprised there was no footpath coming all the way up to the school. I think when people are driving they’re fairly aware of us pedestrians, but when they’re parking they’re not aware of anything. I see this because I do drive sometimes – people double park, block the busses – this is not optimal. I would walk more if it were safer.

Carlotta – English language section

We live at the bottom of Montello. There are parts where there is no sidewalk, and the busses and the cars go quite fast. It’s quite frightening, actually, and you have to pay a lot of attention. Some drivers are careful, and they slow down when they see you on the road, but many others don’t, maybe because they think they’re late or in a hurry. And I don’t feel safe up at the top around the school. There are so many cars, and I’ve actually been hit a couple of times. It wasn’t serious, but I was hit by the side view mirror, and the driver didn’t stop or say anything.

Adeline – French language section

We walk to school first of all because we don’t live far away. It’s good for your health and stimulating for the kids. And lastly because we have lots of problems with the planet right now. I want to teach my kids how important it is to respect the planet, and how if you can avoid driving you should, because of all the pollution it creates. I think it’s safe for kids to walk. There are places on the walk where you have to be careful, but we pay attention and it’s part of them growing up.

Car free – ma non spensierato. Genitori che vanno a scuola a piedi o in bicicletta

Il 22 settembre è il Car Free Day, l’ultimo giorno dell’annuale Settimana europea della mobilità. Che siate o meno liberi dall’auto, come guidatori condividete le strade con un numero crescente di genitori della Scuola Europea a piedi o in bicicletta. Perché sono car free? E per quelli che vanno in macchina – cosa pensano di voi?

Balint – sezione di lingua inglese

Camminiamo perché è una grande scelta per l’ambiente ed è probabilmente la via più veloce per la salita. Camminiamo da quando la mia bambina più piccola aveva quattro anni – sono solo 10 minuti a piedi, quindi è facilmente gestibile per i bambini dell’asilo. Ad essere onesti, non ci si sente così sicuri perché ci sono parti di Via Montello senza marciapiede e dobbiamo condividere la strada con gli automobilisti. Alcuni guidano in modo sicuro; altri… beh, non sono sicuro che abbiano l’esperienza di essere pedoni e capiscano cosa significhi condividere lo spazio con loro, e immagino che non sappiano come ci si sente ad avere le macchine che sfrecciano molto vicine a te mentre cammini con i tuoi figli.

Abbiamo preso la bici elettrica perché penso che guidare sia stressante, e significa solo contribuire inutilmente al traffico mattutino. Andrei a piedi con i bambini se non fosse così lontano, ma facciamo circa 2,5 km in bicicletta, tutti in salita. Penso che alcuni autisti siano molto attenti e altri no – è davvero variabile. Abbiamo due macchine, ma quest’anno abbiamo dovuto decidere se sostituire la seconda o no. Abbiamo chiesto ai bambini se preferivano venire in bici o in macchina, e hanno detto in bici. Così abbiamo comprato delle bici elettriche, e ora ci stiamo liberando della seconda auto per sempre.

Carlotta – sezione di lingua inglese

Viviamo in fondo al Montello. Ci sono parti dove non c’è il marciapiede, e gli autobus e le macchine vanno abbastanza veloci. È abbastanza spaventoso, in realtà, e bisogna prestare molta attenzione. Alcuni autisti sono attenti e rallentano quando ti vedono sulla strada, ma molti altri non lo fanno, forse perché pensano di essere in ritardo o hanno fretta. E non mi sento sicura in cima, intorno alla scuola. Ci sono così tante macchine, e sono stato investito un paio di volte. Non è stato grave, ma sono stata colpita dallo specchietto laterale, e l’autista non si è fermato o non ha detto nulla.

Adeline – sezione di lingua francese

Andiamo a scuola a piedi prima di tutto perché non viviamo lontano. Fa bene alla salute ed è stimolante per i bambini. E infine perché abbiamo molti problemi con il pianeta in questo momento. Voglio insegnare ai miei figli quanto sia importante rispettare il pianeta, e che se si può evitare di prendere al macchina lo si dovrebbe fare, a causa di tutto l’inquinamento che crea. Penso che sia sicuro per i bambini camminare. Ci sono posti sulla passeggiata dove bisogna stare attenti, ma noi facciamo attenzione. Fa parte della loro crescita.

Ivana – sezione di lingua italiana

Facciamo una parte in macchina da Masnago e poi saliamo a piedi per il resto della strada da Via Marzorati. Sono rimasta davvero sorpresa che non ci fosse un sentiero pedonale che arriva fino alla scuola. Penso che quando la gente guida sia abbastanza consapevole di noi pedoni, ma quando parcheggia non fa attenzione a niente. Lo vedo perché guido a volte – la gente parcheggia in doppia fila, blocca gli autobus – questo non è ottimale. Camminerei di più se fosse più sicuro.
