(Scroll down for English) Come presidente dell’AGSEV ho avuto ancora una volta il privilegio di parlare agli studenti e alle studentesse diplomati S7 alla cerimonia del BAC (e, devo aggiungere, è stato un piacere al termine della cerimonia vedere volare in cielo i tocchi di laurea, gentile omaggio della nostra associazione). Per chi di voi ha figli ancora lontani dalla fine della secondaria, ecco il testo del mio discorso.

Cari ragazzi,

É un grande piacere ed un privilegio per me essere qui oggi.

L’associazione genitori, che ho l’onore di presiedere, ha seguito, almeno in parte, la vostra vita scolastica, ha collaborato con i vostri genitori nell’interfaccia con la scuola ed ha lavorato insieme a voi, come comitato studentesco.

Abbiamo vissuto e continuiamo a vivere un periodo particolare, che ci ha portato spesso a rivedere alcune delle nostre priorità e a volte il nostro stesso approccio alla vita quotidiana.

Ognuno di noi, in maniera più o meno pesante, ha passato momenti difficili e voi, in particolare, avete dovuto studiare ed affrontare il Bac in condizioni così particolari, spesso molto difficili, e certamente in un clima spesso denso di preoccupazione ed incertezza.

Credo che mai come quest’anno sia stato messo in discussione il ruolo dell’Ufficio Centrale con cui siamo legati in una forma di “cordone ombelicale” che sempre più si è trasformato in un guinzaglio. Non abbiamo mai chiesto modifiche alle procedure ma solamente la consapevolezza che, nel contesto pandemico, la nostra scuola, qui a Varese, avesse, oggettivamente, avuto il disagio più forte.

Forse è da questo che mi sento di ripartire il prossimo anno, riportare il sistema al servizio degli studenti e non schiavo delle procedure.

Un sistema che possa tutelarci e farci sentire “accolti”.

Ritengo che questa cerimonia, oggi, in questo contesto, abbia un doppio valore, perché non è solo, come di consueto, la fine di un intenso e prestigioso corso di studi e l’inizio di una nuova fase della vostra vita; ma è anche la parte conclusiva (almeno così speriamo) di un periodo drammatico per l’intera comunità umana.

Ricordo i momenti passati insieme in riunioni estenuanti per la discussione degli esami, ed allora ho capito ciò che mi era fino a quel momento sfuggito:ancora una volta la nostra scuola ha contribuito a forgiare donne e uomini in grado di affrontare momenti difficili, situazioni complicate, senza perdere la speranza, senza dimenticare la gioia.

Avete svolto il vostro compito accettando nuove modalità di didattica, nuovi modi di svolgere gli esami, sperimentando in modo costruttivo anche nuovi e forse fino ad oggi inesplorati modi di convivere con una realtà imprevista, e credo quasi per tutti imprevedibile.

La vita continuerà a sorprendervi ed a mettervi alla prova. Prove che a volte non avrete cercato, e che in alcuni casi saranno state vostre scelte.

Ma nel corso del vostro cammino, anche nella nostra Scuola, ed ancor più in questo ultimo periodo, avete dimostrato di essere pronti: non solo a perseguire il vostro successo personale e professionale, ma anche ad affrontare le difficoltà e magari le sconfitte che potrebbero arrivare.

Con assoluta umiltà, permettetemi di dire, e so di parlare a nome di tutti i presenti ed anche di tutti coloro che vi sono vicini e che magari oggi non hanno potuto essere presenti qui, che siamo fieri di voi, di come avete affrontato il vostro percorso, di come vi siete adattati alla tempesta che ha investito la nostra società, di come, anche oggi, ci stiate insegnando quanto possa essere bello continuare a sperare nel futuro, lavorando duramente per realizzare questa speranza.

Sono convinto che utilizzerete quello che vi è stato insegnato e quello che voi stessi avete costruito insieme con la vostra scuola, non solo per perseguire le legittime ed importanti aspettative di successo personale, ma per contribuire a rendere migliori coloro che vi circondano. Come avete fatto con tutti noi nel corso di questi anni.

Nell’augurarvi con affetto che le vostre vite siano serene e ricche di affetti, di cultura, di intelligenza, di lavoro, di speranza, vorrei comunque salutarvi soprattutto con un Grazie: da parte di tutti noi.

In questo periodo siete stati spesso per noi un esempio; e ci avete davvero reso migliori.

Dear 2021 BAC graduates

As President of AGSEV I once again had the privilege of addressing the graduating S7 students at the BAC ceremony (And, I should add, it was also a pleasure to see the students’ graduation caps, offered by AGSEV this year, flying joyfully through the air at the end). For those of you whose children may still be far from finishing secondary, here’s the text of the speech I delivered.

Dear students,

It’s a great pleasure and privilege for me to be here today.

The Parents Association, which I have the honor of presiding over, has followed, at least in part, your school life. We’ve worked together with your parents in interfacing with the school and worked together with you as a student committee.

We’re continuing to live through a strange period, which has often led us to think over some of our priorities and sometimes our very approach to daily life.

Each of us has gone through relatively difficult moments and you, in particular, have had to study for and then face the BAC in very strange, and often difficult conditions, and certainly in a climate often full of concern and uncertainty.

I believe that in no other year have we so questioned the role of the Central Office. We’re tied to them by a kind of “umbilical cord” that has increasingly become a leash. We’ve never asked them for changes in procedures, but asked them only for awareness that, in the context of the pandemic, our school here in Varese has objectively felt the greatest impact.

Perhaps this is the point I want to start from next year. I want to end the system’s slavishness to procedures, and bring it back into the service of the students.

I want a system that can protect us and make us feel “welcomed”.

I believe that this ceremony, today, in this context, has a double value, because it’s not only, as usual, the end of an intense and prestigious course of studies and the beginning of a new phase in your lives. It’s also the concluding part (at least we hope so) of a dramatic period for the entire human community.

I remember the moments spent together in exhausting meetings to discuss the exams, and then I understood what had escaped me until then: once again our school has helped to forge women and men capable of facing difficult moments, complicated situations, without losing hope, without forgetting joy.

You’ve carried out your task by accepting new ways of teaching, new ways of taking exams, experimenting constructively with new and perhaps hitherto unexplored ways of living with an unforeseen reality, and I believe for almost everyone unpredictable.

Life will continue to surprise and test you. Trials that sometimes will have been your choice; but in others you won’t have sought.

But in the course of your journey, even in our school, and even more so in this last period, you’ve shown that you are ready. Not only to pursue your personal and professional success, but also to face the difficulties and perhaps the defeats that may come your way.

With absolute humility, let me say, and I know I speak for everyone here and also for all those who are close to you and who perhaps could not be here today, that we are proud of you, of how you have faced your journey, of how you have adapted to the storm that has hit our society, of how, even today, you are teaching us how good it can be to continue to hope for the future, working hard to realize this hope.

I am convinced that you’ll use what you’ve been taught and what you’ve built together with your school, not only to pursue legitimate and important expectations of personal success, but to help make those around you better. As you have done with all of us over these years.

With affection, I wish that your lives will be peaceful and rich in affection, culture, intelligence, work and hope. I’d like to say goodbye to you above all with a thank you, from all of us.

During this period you have often been an example to us. And you have truly made us better.
