[Per l’italiano vedi sotto] In an effort to become a truly Green School this year, there’s a new procedure to help us reduce the use of single-use plastic on school trips.

Why the change in procedure?

Students normally receive a ½ litre bottle of water in single-use plastic with their packed lunch for school trips.

But for the many children who already carry a reusable water bottle with them on school trips, this extra bottle is unnecessary – it’s extra water, extra weight, and extra plastic.

In November, a proposal was voted on and approved at the Comitato Mensa to make this bottle of water optional, letting parents choose not to accept the single-use plastic bottle if they already supply their children with a reusable water bottle.

The new procedure has already been put into place for P4 and P5 classes on their trips to Milan in December and January. And we’ve already reduced the number of single-use plastic bottles by 40%. Based on these positive results, the Mensa will now extend this new procedure for all Nursery and Primary levels.

New procedure

From now on, when a school trip is announced by the Primary/Nursery Secretary (Susanna Cernuschi), your Class Representative will:

• Ask parents who wants/doesn’t want a bottle of water for the trip (via a Doodle, email, etc.)
• At least 7 days before the trip, communicate the number of bottles and the names of the children who need them to the Mensa office and the class teacher via email. This way, the Mensa can check their subscriber list (for packed lunches and water) and the teacher can be correctly distribute the bottles on the day of the trip.

IMPORTANT: There is no change in the price of the meal for 2019-2020. The price of the water is very small (about €0.20), and already included, and there’s no reimbursement if you don’t take a bottle.

However, the money saved will be calculated, set aside, and used for another project (still to be decided).

What’s more, you’ll be taking a small positive step toward reducing the European School’s use of single use plastics and reducing the chances that those plastic bottles end up on our streets, in our seas or in our landfills. Thank you!

 

Riduzione della plastica monouso nelle gite scolastiche per la scuola elementare e materna

Quest’anno, nel tentativo di diventare una vera Green School, c’è una nuova procedura che ci aiuterà a ridurre l’uso della plastica monouso nelle gite scolastiche della Scuola Primaria.

Perché questo cambiamento di procedura?

Normalmente gli studenti ricevono una bottiglia d’acqua da ½ litro in plastica monouso con il pranzo al sacco per le gite scolastiche.

Ma per i molti bambini che già portano con sé una bottiglia d’acqua riutilizzabile durante le gite scolastiche, questa bottiglia in più non è necessaria. E’ acqua in più, peso in più e plastica in più.

A novembre è stata votata e approvata dal Comitato Mensa la proposta di rendere facoltativa questa bottiglia d’acqua, permettendo ai genitori di scegliere di non accettare la bottiglia di plastica monouso se già forniscono ai propri figli una borraccia riutilizzabile.

La nuova procedura è già stata messa in atto per le classi P4 e P5 nei loro viaggi a Milano in dicembre e gennaio. E abbiamo già ridotto del 40% il numero di bottiglie di plastica monouso. Sulla base di questi risultati positivi, la Mensa estende ora questa nuova procedura a tutti i livelli di Materna e Primaria.

La nuova procedura

D’ora in poi, quando la Sig.ra Cernuschi, Segretaria della Primaria/Materna comunica una gita scolastica, il Rappresentante di Classe dovrà:

• Chiedere ai genitori se vogliono/non vogliono una bottiglia d’acqua per la gita (tramite ad es. un Doodle o un’e-mail)
• Comunicare via email almeno 7 giorni prima della data della gita sia all’ufficio Mensa che all’insegnante di classe, il numero di bottiglie e i nomi dei bambini che ne hanno bisogno. In questo modo, la Mensa può controllare la lista degli iscritti per i pranzi al sacco e per l’acqua e l’insegnante può distribuire la mattina stessa della gita le bottiglie di acqua in modo corretto.

IMPORTANTE: Il prezzo del pasto per il 2019-2020 non subirà variazioni. Il prezzo dell’acqua è molto basso (circa 0,20 euro), ed è già incluso, e non ci sono rimborsi se non si prende una bottiglia.

Tuttavia, il denaro risparmiato verrà calcolato, messo da parte e utilizzato per un altro progetto (ancora da decidere).

È un piccolo, ma importante contributo per ridurre l’uso della plastica monouso da parte della Scuola Europea ed impedire che quelle bottiglie di plastica finiscano nelle nostre strade, nei nostri mari o nelle nostre discariche. Grazie!
